Dear Heather ... I just read in the Xaverian of Paul's passing and it was a jolt! I want to send my deepest sympathy to you and your kids especially and all the extended family. I was thinking of Paul just recently and thought about connecting as I'm about to retire and may head down East soon to visit my Mom in Nfld. Like Barry Sutherland noted (also a great guy), I was on the 4th Floor of MacPherson in 1975. But I was more fortunate than Barry as I showed up from a small town on the Southcoast of Nfld at 16, a week early and the only one in residence for a week, as I had a ride with a cousin. After a week Paul arrived as my roommate. He had already spent a year at UPEI and I'm not sure he wanted such a Newbie Newfie for a roommate, but if he didn't he didn't show it. He made my first year better than it would have been, of that I'm sure and we had a lot of laughs. I moved the following year when his old UPEI roommate, Wayne Bernard, decided to attend X and I moved on as a confident young gaffer!! I ran into Paul off and on at X where I ended up as RA and fourth year RD. His big brother approach likely had something to do with that.
We did meet for dinner on one of his trips to Ottawa about 18-20 years ago and we had a lot of laughs over the course of the evening. Distance changes things, time really doesn't that much as we were the same two guys really. He was indeed a super guy as others have noted! I always wanted to tell him something I learned in recent years as I know he would have gotten a good laugh out of it. I spoke with Fred Doucet a number of years ago who now lives in Ottawa and whom I first met at X when he was Director of Development and many know him as the best friend of Brian Mulroney.
One day I was chatting with him and said that we had a great room at X as we could see the cafeteria across from MacPherson and didn't have to freeze waiting in line in winter. He asked which room I was in and I said the top corner room when facing the residence and he said that's where "he and Brian" stayed their first year. I always wanted to tell Paul that as he would have gotten a chuckle out of that bit of history, nothing else, and I wanted to say he should have been PM too! Frankly Paul had all the attributes to do whatever he wished, included that, if he decided to bear down as he did and set his mind to it. Sorry for the long rant, which Paul would rib me for I"m sure, but I felt I had to say something. It may have been more for me than dear Paul! Take care and God bless

Heather, we are deeply saddened by Paul’s passing. He was a tremendous teammate and person who we have had the pleasure of being friends with since our school days. Wonderful memories of the competitor Paul was, our PEI High School Hockey Championship, and great times playing fastball. So many great memories with Paul having fun just hanging out. Was so nice to see you this week Heather along with so many of Paul’s family and friends at the celebration of Paul. It was a testament to the impact Paul had and the great person he has always been. Sincere condolences to you, and to the Steele and MacLellan families. Heaven has a new angel.

Heather-my condolences on Paul's passing. After many years not seeing Paul I had the good fortune to play a few rounds of golf with him over the past two summers where we rekindled some of our memories growing up in Summerside together. Paul was, as always, insightful, competitive, kind - and demonstrated a great sense of humor. My thoughts are with you and family. Steve Loggie

I remember Paul well from our days teaching at Charlottetown Rural High School! Although he only taught at the Rural for one year as a replacement teacher, he made a deep impression on me, as well as many other teachers and students. It is hard for me to believe that he has passed on! Much, much too young!

Heather, Steele and MacLellan families,
I was deeply saddened to hear of Paul's passing.
Paul and I were friends in high school and we both went on to St. FX. Even though he was a year ahead of me at X he made me feel very welcome and always checked in with me to see how things were going. I always enjoyed coming home to PEI in the summer and bumping into Paul at the beach. It was great to catch up with him. His cheerful, positive attitude always came through.
I hope in time, thoughts of happy times will bring you peace and comfort.
Please accept my heartfelt condolences.

Dear Heather, peace be with you and your family. Paul and I met in 1975 when we lived on the 4th floor of MacPherson House at St. F.X.U. and later in a house together on Pleasant Street. We were friends and classmates and brothers of fraternity.
I was always inspired by Paul’s intelligence and perseverance. Back at X, when it came to crunch time, Paul was the go to guy that was on the ball athletically and academically.
He carried and inspired me many times with advice and sometimes warranted sarcastic humour. The boys were lucky to have Steeley the man among us. Not only was he first in our class but was often the only one to step up and be the adult in the room. His leadership and commitment to do the right thing was evident throughout his great life.
With you Heather he became even a brighter star. Paul will continue to inspire us all as his memory will shine in our hearts

I remember one time there was a golf tournament. I got placed with Paul. I had a blast. The worst golfer ever, but he was kind, funny and patient. I won pink golf balls that tournament.

Very saddened to hear about Paul’s passing. Paul ( Mr .Steele ) was my physed, leadership teacher and soccer coach for 3 seasons at Bluefield in the late 90’s. He was great at both, but what stood out was he always had time to chat about anything, from projects, to soccer plays, fishing and life in general. One of my greatest memories was the drive to our high school soccer championship game - he had us so focused and pumped up, as we drove in his car to Rural windows down listening to Chumbawumba and eye of the tiger ( blaring). We went on to win that championship gold medal. I’ll never forget those good old soccer and Bluefield, days and Mr. Paul Steel was a huge part of that.

In the late 1980's, a group of citizens from the East Prince area met to discuss the possibility of establishing a co-operative funeral home. Two such homes were operating successfully in Prince County, namely the West Prince Funeral Home in Palmer Road and the Evangeline Funeral Home in Urbainville. As a result, on January 24th, 1989, the East Prince Funeral Co-operative Ltd. was formed.
