*****Update****Funeral Service will be held at the East Prince Funeral Home chapel on Tuesday July 2nd, 2024 at 2:00 p.m.
The Northern Lights will shine a little brighter after the peaceful death of Nancy MacFarlane at the Garden Home, Charlottetown, in the early hours of April 18, 2024.
Nancy grew up in Summerside with many wonderful summers spent wandering the shores at the family cottage at MacCallums Point in Lower Bedeque. She was the daughter of the late Lorne and Pearl (Vaughan) MacFarlane. She was predeceased by her brothers, Howard, John Alan, and Malcolm.
Nancy is survived by her sister-in-law, Margaret MacFarlane; nephews, David MacFarlane (Danette Cashman), Gordon MacFarlane (Sarah Totten), Myles MacKinney (Helene); nieces, Amy MacFarlane (Christopher Grandy), Luanne MacKinney; special cousins, Susan Stavert (Jim), Diana Garnhum (Adam), Sarah Jane Bradley (Justin), and great nephews and nieces, Matt and Evan MacFarlane and Jessica, Katie, Daniel, and Emma Grandy.
Nancy touched many lives during her 92 years. After a brief nursing career at the Royal Victoria Hospital in Montreal, Nancy taught high school in St. Catherines, Ontario. Soon after the death of her father, Nancy returned home to lovingly care for her mother, for many years.
Nancy’s commitment to and belief in community was evident in her involvement as a youth baseball coach, Salvation Army volunteer, literacy tutor, and Meals on Wheels driver.
Nancy shared her incredible sense of adventure with loved ones - from epic hikes, hot air ballooning, white water rafting, to rappelling. She attempted unicycling in her younger years and later encouraged her nephew, David, to master the art. A proud life member of the International Juggler’s Association, Nancy was an avid kayaker who enjoyed kayak trips with friends and time spent on the water. She took up roller blading as a senior and then as an octogenarian, Nancy progressed to zip-lining and indoor skydiving.
Nancy modelled frugality and generosity, appreciated life’s simple pleasures, and by example, taught us to unapologetically be our authentic selves.
Cremation has taken place under the care of the East Prince Funeral Home, Summerside. A celebration of Nancy’s life will be held later this summer.
Special thanks to the staff at Andrews of Summerside and Garden Home, Charlottetown for their loving and competent care of Nancy in recent years.
In Nancy’s honour, donations may be made to the Prince County Hospital Foundation or a charity of your choice.
In Nancy’s words, “In the end, all that matters is love.”
ABOUT US
In the late 1980's, a group of citizens from the East Prince area met to discuss the possibility of establishing a co-operative funeral home. Two such homes were operating successfully in Prince County, namely the West Prince Funeral Home in Palmer Road and the Evangeline Funeral Home in Urbainville. As a result, on January 24th, 1989, the East Prince Funeral Co-operative Ltd. was formed.
