Obituary of Richard Ernest Gallant
Richard Ernest Gallant (Butch): The death occurred peacefully surrounded by family and friends at the Prince County Hospital, Summerside, PEI on Friday the 9th of August 2024 of Summerside, PEI and formerly of Ottawa, Ontario, aged 74 years. Richard was born in Summerside, PEI to his loving mother, Gladys Gallant who currently resides in Parkhill Residence in Summerside. He also shared the family home growing up with his extra special “parent” figures, uncle Earl and aunt Inez Gallant, both previously deceased. Butch was single at the time of his death and had no children of his own, although he adored his many nieces and nephews and the children of dear friends. Richard honorably served his country in the Canadian Air Force for 30 years and then went on to work managing the bar at an Officers Mess in Ottawa for at least another 11 years. He loved both of his jobs and was very proud to have served Canada. Following his retirement in 2018, he returned to PEI to spend his golden years near family. He loved to golf and play pool in his spare time and faithfully visited his mother daily at her residence.
In addition to his special uncle and aunt, Earl and Inez, Butch was predeceased by his maternal uncles Joseph, Calice, Phillip, Fred, Henry and Edward and his maternal aunts Adeline Fardy, Tillie Thompson, Marjorie Knycha, and Millie Brenton. In addition, he was predeceased by his beloved cousin Bobby (Bubbles) Gallant (Janet) of Summerside PEI, a loss he never quite got over.
In addition to his mother, Gladys Gallant, Rick will be lovingly remembered by his sister, Sandy Shearer (Dwayne), Calgary, AB, cousin (but more of a brother) Douglas Brenton (Eunice) North Winsloe, PEI, and cousins Pamela Arsenault (John), Roxanne MacDonald (Blair), Tanya Wallace, all of Summerside, Debby Floyd (Philip), of Stratford PEI and many more cousins, nieces and nephews all over the country, too many to name individually. When your mom is one of 11 siblings it is easy to lose count of cousins, nieces and nephews.
Cremation has been entrusted to East Prince Funeral Home, 245 Pope Road, Summerside. As per Richard’s wishes there will be no funeral or memorial service. His ashes will be scattered at a later date at a family gathering.
Donations
If desired, donations in Richard’s memory can be made directly to the Alzheimer’s Society or the IWK Children’s hospital.
ABOUT US
In the late 1980's, a group of citizens from the East Prince area met to discuss the possibility of establishing a co-operative funeral home. Two such homes were operating successfully in Prince County, namely the West Prince Funeral Home in Palmer Road and the Evangeline Funeral Home in Urbainville. As a result, on January 24th, 1989, the East Prince Funeral Co-operative Ltd. was formed.
