Obituary of Jennie Mae Matthews
The death occurred peacefully, surrounded by her loving family at the Prince County Hospital, Summerside, PEI, on Wednesday, September 25th, 2024, of Jennie Mae Matthews (Dawson) of Summerside, in her 99th year.
Jennie was born in Albany to the late Murdock and Grace (Francis) Dawson. Beloved wife of the late Alvin Matthews and loving mother of Darlene Norring of Parksville, BC and grandson Chace Norring of Langford, BC.
Survived by her siblings; Jean Paynter of Ottawa, Margaret Newsome of Crapaud, PEI, Bertie Thompson of Summerside, sister in-law Erma Dawson of Albany, PEI and many nieces and nephews.
Predeceased by her son David, siblings Mildred (Ralph) Harvey, Blanche (Hillus) Cairns, James Dawson, Bennett Dawson, Mary (Douglas) Howatt, Louise (Charlie) Thomson, Helen (Delbert) Smith, Harvey Dawson, brother in-law James Paynter, Richard Newsome, John Yeo and Sterling Thompson.
Resting at East Prince Funeral Home, 245 Pope Rd, Summerside until Monday, September 30th, 2024 where a funeral service will be held in the funeral home chapel at 11:00 a.m. Interment to take place in People’s Cemetery, Summerside. A private family only visiting hour will be held on Monday morning from 10:00 a.m. until time of service. In lieu of flowers, donations in Jennie’s memory may be made directly to the Summerside Presbyterian Church.

In the late 1980's, a group of citizens from the East Prince area met to discuss the possibility of establishing a co-operative funeral home. Two such homes were operating successfully in Prince County, namely the West Prince Funeral Home in Palmer Road and the Evangeline Funeral Home in Urbainville. As a result, on January 24th, 1989, the East Prince Funeral Co-operative Ltd. was formed.
